RECAP: COMEBACK FALLS SHORT AFTER DOMINANT THIRD PERIOD
Cyclones get a Pair in Final Frame, Cannot Find Tying Goal
Independence, MO- The Cincinnati Cyclones (12-8-2-2) fell to the Missouri Mavericks, 3-2, on Saturday night. Forward Seth Ambroz, and defenseman Cody Carlson scored the goals for the Cyclones, who controlled much of the final 40 minutes of play.
After the Mavericks took a 1-0 lead after the first period on a goal from David de Kastrozza, the Cyclones turned up the offensive pressure in the second, getting a number of quality scoring chances. Despite the effort put forth by Cincinnati, the Mavericks went up, 3-0 after the second, on goals from forwards Colin Markison and Tyler Barnes.
Cincinnati continued to apply the offensive pressure in the third, and 6:10 into the final frame, forward Andrew Yogan took the puck behind the net and sent a pass out to Ambroz who fired it past Missouri netminder Parker Milner, cutting Cincinnati’s deficit to 3-1.
The Cyclones continued to dominate the third period, and with just under seven minutes left, defenseman Steve Weinstein took a point shot that was tipped by Carlson past Milner, pulling the Cyclones to within a goal, 3-2.
Cincinnati kept peppering the Missouri net with shots, and got a number of Grade A scoring chances late in the frame with the goalie pulled. Despite the offensive onslaught, the Cyclones were unable to secure the game-tying goal, and the Mavericks held on for a 3-2 win.
The Cyclones were outshot, 34-31, on the night, with goaltender Neil Conway stopping 31 of the shots he faced in the loss. Cincinnati’s power play was held scoreless on all three attempts. The Cyclones wrap up their three-game road trip on Sunday evening in Wichita against the Thunder. Faceoff is scheduled for 6:05pm ET.
