CYCLONES SUFFER TOUGH SHOOTOUT LOSS
Indianapolis, IN- The Cincinnati Cyclones (36-30-4-0) dropped a 3-2 shootout decision to the Indy Fuel on Sunday afternoon. Forward Brandon McNally and defenseman Craig Dalrymple netted the goals for the Cyclones. The loss, coupled with a South Carolina Stingrays overtime win drops Cincinnati to fifth place in the South Division playoff race, one point back of South Carolina for the fourth and final spot.
The Cyclones found the back of the net late in the opening period when forward Nick Huard sent a pass ahead to McNally down the right wing, and he roofed a shot past Fuel netminder Eric Levine to put Cincinnati ahead, 1-0, after 20 minutes.
Indy answered with a pair midway through the second from forwards Michael Neal and Kenny Ryan, giving the Fuel a 2-1 lead, 12:38 into the second.
Cincinnati evened the game up roughly four minutes later when Dalrymple took the puck at the right point and fired a shot through heavy traffic that trickled through and into the net, tying the game, 2-2.
The 2-2 score held up throughout the remainder of the second, and in the third Cincinnati turned up the offensive pressure, outshooting the Fuel 14-11 in the frame. Despite the increased offensive opportunities, the Cyclones were unable to net the go-ahead goal, and the two sides headed to overtime.
After a scoreless overtime the teams went to a shootout, and in that skills competition Indy forward Alex Wideman scored the only goal to send the Fuel to a 3-2 shootout win.
The Cyclones outshot Indy, 39-31 on the night, with goaltender Michael Houser turning aside 28 in defeat. Cincinnati heads down south on Friday to take on the Greenville Swamp Rabbits. Face-off is slated for 7:00pm ET.
