CYCLONES SURVIVE LATE PUSH TO CLIP WINGS

Cincinnati Leap Frogs Kalamazoo Back into Third Place

Cincinnati, OH- The Cincinnati Cyclones (29-21-2-0) earned a 2-1win over the Kalamazoo Wings Saturday, on Cyclones Fight Cancer Night. Forwards Alex Kile and Justin Vaive netted the goals for the Cyclones, who are now back in third place in the ECHL’s Central Division.

The Cyclones took a 1-0 lead midway through the opening frame when forward Winston Day Chief won a puck battle along the boards and sent a pass to Kile who skated in, dragged the puck around Wings goaltender Joel Martin and scored to give Cincinnati a 1-0 lead after the first.

In the second, Cincinnati’s power play put the ‘Clones ahead by a pair when a point shot from defenseman Eric Knodel was redirected in by Vaive who was stationed out front, pushing the Cyclones lead to 2-0.

Cincinnati took their 2-0 lead into the locker room after two periods, and late in the third, the Wings pulled to within a goal, 2-1, when forward Tyler Heinonen was awarded a goal that appeared to deflect off the post and roll along the goal line but never crossed, however following a conference between the officials they deemed it a good goal.

That was all the offense Kalamazoo was able to muster as goaltender Jonas Johansson turned aside 32 of the 33 shots he faced to preserve the win. Cincinnati was outshot, 33-19 on the night, while the power play converted in one of its three chances.

The Cyclones continue their four-game home stand on Wednesday night against the South Carolina Stingrays. Face-off is slated for 7:35pm ET.
