Tonight's Matchup: Riding the momentum of three straight wins, the Cyclones are back out on the road tonight in hopes of another crucial win against the Toledo Walleye. The Clones won a back-and-forth battle against the Fish at U.S. Bank Arena this past Sunday to run their regular season record to 2-1-0-1.
Scouting the Walleye: Derek Lalonde’s club closed the gap in the North Division race by beating the Fort Wayne Komets 2-1 in a shootout on Wednesday night. Coming into the weekend, they trail the division leaders by five points and hold a 12 point edge over Cincinnati. Tyler Barnes and Anthony Luciani remain tied for the Walleye in scoring with 44 points in as-many games this season. Barnes’ totals rank tied for the active lead among all ECHL rookies. Jeff Lerg continues to be one of league’s best goaltenders, leading the Fish with a 21-5-1-1 record and a 2.35 goals-against average. Fellow backstop Neil Conway, who suffered the loss last Sunday against Cincinnati, is 5-3-2-1 with a stingy 2.15 GAA.
Last Time Out: Some late game offense and a 15-save shutout performance by Sam Brittain led the Cyclones past the IceMen by a 2-0 final score in front of 1,853 at U.S. Bank Arena on Wednesday night. It was the third consecutive meeting between the clubs that Cincinnati didn’t allow a goal and its sixth shutout of the season overall.
The First Tells the Tale: When the Clones have dictated the play in the early-going of games, they have been extremely difficult to beat. When leading or tied after 20 minutes, they are a staggering 21-6-1-2.
Notorious VIG: Cyclones rookie forward Stephan Vigier has been a consistent offensive weapon this season. He leads the club with four game-winning goals and ranks fourth on the team in overall points. More impressively, his game-winning goal totals rank tied for second among all ECHL first-year players.
