TOLEDO , Ohio – Terry Broadhurst’s goal with just 35 seconds left in overtime gave the Toledo Walleye (2-0-0-0) a 3-2 victory over the Cincinnati Cyclones (1-0-1-0) in front of 4,631 at Huntington Center on Friday night.
Cincinnati drew first blood at 8:13 of the opening period when Mathieu Aubin sent a laser-accurate wrist shot past Toledo goaltender Kent Simpson (W, 21 saves, 1-0-0-0) for a 1-0 lead. However, Toledo found the equalizer late in the period as Kyle Rogers drove to the net with the puck and forced it over the goal line past Cyclones net minder Brian Foster (OTL, 31 saves, 1-0-1-0), knotting the score at one through 20 minutes.
In the middle stanza, the Walleye broke the tie as Wes O’Neill caught a pass from Terry Broadhurst and potted a wrist shot at the 10:56 mark, giving the home team a 2-1 lead through two periods.
After playing nearly 15 minutes of scoreless hockey in the third period, Cincinnati was able to pull even as Mike Pelech grabbed a rebound and tucked in his first goal of the year past Simpson – making it 2-2 at the 14:05 mark. Neither team could break the deadlock in regulation, so the contest was decided in overtime.
In the extra session, the Cyclones put on some early pressure but were unable to strike. Then, with just 35 seconds left in overtime, Terry Broadhurst struck down the right wing and sent a low wrist shot through Foster’s legs to give the Walleye a 3-2 victory.
Cincinnati was 0-for-3 on the power play tonight. Toledo was 0-for-2
