Wings Defeat Cyclones, 8-2

CINCINNATI, OhioCurtis Valk's three-point night led the Kalamazoo Wings (3-1-1-0) past the Cincinnati Cyclones (1-1-0-0) by an 8-2 final score in front of 5,855 at U.S. Bank Arena on Saturday night.

The Wings struck from the sharpest of angles at 9:49 when rookie Curtis Valk netted his second lamplighter of the season from right along the goal line to make it 1-0. The Cyclones would answer back quickly though, at 11:18, as Wade Megan fired a shot that found its way through goaltender Joel Martin (W, 23 saves, 2-1-1-0) to knot things at one. At the 14:01 mark, Andrew Yogan cut in and sniped a backhanded laser over Martin's left shoulder to give Cincinnati their first lead of the night at 2-1. Unfortunately, rookie Isaac Macleod buried a rebound from the left circle past Cyclones goalie Rob Madore (L, 19 saves, 1-1-0-0) with just 18 seconds to play in the period to deadlock the tilt at two through 20 minutes.

The Wings extended their lead 6:12 into the middle frame as Lane Scheidl caught a feed between the circles and tallied his second of the season, making it 3-2. Similar to the opening period, Kalamazoo found the back of the net late in the second; a scramble at the net knocked the puck loose for Valk, who deposited his second of the night to give his team a 4-2 edge after two periods.

The Wings continued to add offensive numbers as the third period got underway. Josh Brittain scored back-to-back goals just three minutes apart beginning at the 5:40 mark before Ludwig Blomstrand, and Riley Wetmore all found the net to seal an 8-2 victory for Kalamazoo.
