Cyclones Feast on Walleye in OT, 3-2

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Geoff Irwin potted the game-winning goal just 57 seconds into overtime to lift the Cincinnati Cyclones (29-29-2-7) over the Toledo Walleye (45-15-4-2) by a 3-2 final score in front of 2,121 at U.S. Bank Arena on Tuesday night.

Despite outshooting the Walleye 12-6 in the opening frame, the Cyclones found themselves scoreless through 20 minutes as Jeff Lerg (OTL, 23 saves, 29-8-2-1) and Rob Madore (W, 23 saves, 14-18-2-6) remained perfect through 20 minutes.

The scoreless drought continued through the middle stanza as both teams failed to capitalize on a power play chance. The Cyclones led in the shots on net department 20-13 at the second intermission.

The Cyclones finally ended the stalemate just 4:01 into the third when Josh McFadden sniped a shot past Lerg to make it 1-0 from outside the left circle. Then, just 1:33 later, David MacDonald caught up to a puck on the right wing wall and flung a shot into the net over Lerg's shoulder - extending Cincinnati's edge to 2-0. Unfortunately, the Walleye would pull the goaltender to spark a rally; A.J. Jerks and Troy Schwab each scored goals just 25 seconds apart in the final two minutes to pull even and send the game into overtime.

Cincinnati wasted little time getting down the ice to start the bonus session, as Brett Wysopal dumped and chased a puck into the right wing corner. Once he caught up to it against the end boards, he fed Geoff Irwin in the slot who peppered home the game-winning strike to give the Cyclones a 3-2 overtime win.
