CYCLONES LOSE LEAD LATE, FALL IN SCHOOL DAY AFFAIR
Cincinnati Could Not Overcome Late Wheeling Push
Cincinnati, OH-The Cincinnati Cyclones (5-2-0-1) fell to the Wheeling Nailers, 7-5, on Tuesday morning. Forwards Zach Budish, Joe Wilson, Jaynen Rissling and Nick Huard, and defenseman Cody Carlson scored the goals for the Cyclones, who, at one time, led Wheeling, 5-2, late in the third.
The Cyclones got on the board early in this one, finding the back of the net just 5:54 into the opening period, when Huard sent a pass through the crease right to Budish who slammed home the puck, putting Cincinnati up, 1-0.
It only took 35 seconds for Cincinnati to find the back of the net again, as Carlson took the puck at the right point and launched a slapshot right past Wheeling netminder Frankie Palazzese, extending the Cyclones’ lead to 2-0.
Wheeling got on the board midway through the frame when defenseman Brett Stern scored on a shot from the point, cutting Cincinnati’s lead to 2-1 after 20 minutes.
The Cyclones pushed their lead back to two goals midway through the frame, when Wilson fired a shot from the point that deflected off of the crossbar and in, putting Cincinnati up, 3-1.
The Nailers answered right back, and struck on the power play just over a minute later, when forward Derek Army beat Cyclones goaltender Brad Thiessen, cutting Cincinnati’s lead to 3-2 after the second period.
The Cyclones continued their forward motion in the third, as just 1:24 into the frame, Rissling took the puck off of an offensive zone faceoff, and trickled it past Palazzese, sending Cincinnati to a 4-2 lead.
The Cyclones’ power play got into the mix later in the frame, as forward Joe Pendenza sent a pass to Huard who slapped it into the net to give the Cyclones a 5-2 lead, 12:58 into the third period.
Wheeling’s offense came to life soon thereafter, as defenseman Clark Seymour netted a pair of goals, with one coming on the power play, cutting Cincinnati’s lead to 5-4 with three minutes left.
The Nailers tied the game on a goal from forward Zach Torquato, and took a 6-5 lead after Stern recorded his second of the night. Wheeling’s Jarrett Burton sealed the come-from-behind win with an empty netter with six seconds left.
The Cyclones were outshot, 40-26, while the power play converted on one-of-five opportunities. The Cyclones now head back home for a Wednesday night meeting with the Fort Wayne Komets. Faceoff is slated for 7:35pm.
