DEFENSE TURNS OFFENSIVE AS CYCLONES WIN CLOSE ONE

Cyclones win First of Nine Meetings with Evansville

Cincinnati, OH-The Cincinnati Cyclones (5-1-0-1) took down the Evansville IceMen, 2-1, on Saturday night. Defensemen Garrett Noonan and Steve Weinstein scored the goals for the Cyclones, who win their third game of the last four played.

After a scoreless opening period that saw both teams get a plethora of quality scoring chances, the Cyclones turned up the offensive pressure in the second, controlling the majority of play in the middle frame. The second was highlighted by a couple of short handed, odd-man rushes for the Cyclones, however Evansville goaltender Christoffer Bengtsberg came up with some big saves to preserve the scoreless tie through 40 minutes.

The Cyclones wasted little time finding the back of the net in the third, as just 2:24 into the frame, forward Christiaan Minella sent a pass to Noonan who beat Bengtsberg to but the cyclones up, 1-0.

That lead became 2-0 roughly two minutes later, when Weinstein launched a shot form the high-slot past Bengtsberg, extending the lead to two goals, 4:55 into the third.

Evansville cut the lead in half with just 14 seconds left when forward Daultan Leveille beat Cyclones netminder Brandon Whitney, cutting the Cyclones’ lead to 2-1.

That is all the offense Evansville was able to muster, as Whitney stood tall, stopping 25-of-26 shots he faced to collect his first win of the season.

The Cyclones outshot Evansville on the night, 27-26, while the power play was held scoreless on both opportunities. The Cyclones next take the ice on Tuesday morning against the Wheeling Nailers in the first of three school day games this season for Cincinnati. Faceoff is slated for 10:35am
