CYCLONES FALL TO QUAD CITY
Downing Notches 200th Pro Point in Losing Effort
Moline, IL- The Cincinnati Cyclones (35-27-5-4) fell to the Quad City Mallards, 6-3, on Friday night. Forwards Andrew Yogan and Colin Mulvey, and defenseman Jonathan Diaby potted the goals for the Cyclones.
The Cyclones controlled the bulk of play in the opening period and drew first blood late in the frame, when a shot from forward Jack Downing bounced off of Mallards goaltender Brody Hoffmann right to Yogan, and he slammed in the rebound to put Cincinnati up, 1-0, after 20 minutes.
The Mallards struck early in the second, getting a marker from forward Tanner Eberle to tie the game, 1-1, 3:15 into the middle frame. The Mallards took a 2-1 lead midway through the period when forward Olivier Archambault scored on the power play.
The Cyclones were not deterred and picked up the offensive pressure in the last 10 minutes of the frame. With less than four minutes remaining in the period, forward Branden Gracel slipped a pass to Mulvey who snuck in on a breakaway and fired a shot off the crossbar and into the net, pulling Cincinnati even with the Mallards, 2-2, through two periods.
The momentum was short lived for the Cyclones, as two early third period goals from Mallards forward Brady Brassart put Quad City up, 4-2, 5:30 into the final stanza.
After the Mallards tacked on one more from forward Matt Neal to bring their lead to 5-2, Cincinnati struck once more with just under three minutes left, when Downing sent a pass to Diaby at the left point, and he hammered home a one timer to cut Cincinnati’s deficit to 5-3. The assist marked Downing’s second point of the night, and the 200th of his pro hockey career.
That was all the offense the Cyclones were able to muster, as an empty netter from Archambault sealed the 6-3 win for Quad City. The Cyclones outshot the Mallards, 33-26 on the night, with goaltender Andy Iles stopping 20 shots in the loss.
Cincinnati wraps up the 2015-16 regular season on Saturday night against the Mallards. Faceoff is scheduled for 8:05pm ET in Quad City.
