WEEGAR SKATES IN FIRST NHL GAME

Defenseman is Fifth Former Cyclone to Make NHL Debut this Season

Cincinnati, OH- Former Cincinnati Cyclones defenseman MacKenzie Weegar made his National Hockey League (NHL) debut with the Florida Panthers on Monday night, in a 4-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens. He dished out pair of hits, served a minor penalty, and recorded a shot on goal in 16:45 of ice time.

“We are extremely happy for MacKenzie making his debut in the NHL,” remarked Cyclones Head Coach Matt Macdonald. “He has worked extremely hard for this opportunity and it’s been exciting to see him develop into the elite player that he has become. We wish him all the best in what will surely be a long career.”

A native of Ottawa, ON, Weegar skated in 21 games for the Cyclones during the 2014-15 season where he totaled a goal and 12 assists in that time. The rest of his pro career has been spent in the American Hockey League (AHL) where he has amassed 22 goals and 44 assists in 120 career games.

Prior to turning pro in 2014, the 2013 seventh-round draft pick of the Panthers enjoyed two successful seasons with the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior League (QMJHL) where he racked up 103 points in 123 career games (20g, 83a). He helped the Mooseheads to a Memorial Cup Championship in 2014.

Weegar becomes the fifth former Cyclone to make his NHL debut this season, joining Jeremey Smith (Colorado), Wade Megan (St. Louis Blues), and Mike Liambas and Frederick Gaudreau (Nashville Predators). He is the 23rd former Cyclone along with the 620th former ECHLer to skate in an NHL game.
