CYCLONES OVERCOME BY NAILERS IN WEEKEND FINALE

Wheeling Mounts Third Period Comeback, Erases Two-Goal Deficit

                   

 

Wheeling, WV- The Cincinnati Cyclones (12-5-2-0) dropped a 3-2 decision to the Wheeling Nailers on Sunday afternoon, in the finale of a three-game weekend. Forwards Brady Vail and Pascal Aquin tallied the goals for the Cyclones.

It did not take long for Cincinnati to find the back of the net, as just 4:48 in, Vail skated into the high slot and launched a shot through a screen in front of the net and in, putting Cincinnati ahead, 1-0. The Cyclones took a 2-0 lead heading into the intermission, when forward Vas Glotov sent a pass from below the goal line in front to Aquin, and she slapped the puck past Wheeling netminder Matt O’Connor for his ninth goal of the season.

After the Nailers cut Cincinnati’s lead to 2-1 after the second on a goal from forward Alex Rauter, Wheeling tied the game up just 1:10 into the third on a marker from Nick Saricino to pull the Nailers even, 2-2. Wheeling took the lead with 4:10 to play in regulation when former Cyclone Winston Day Chief tipped in a shot to give the Nailers their first lead of the night, 3-2.

Cincinnati continued to pressure, and had a few chances late on a 6-on-4 advantage with the goaltender pulled, however were not able to net the equalizer, and the Nailers held on for the 3-2 win.

Wheeling outshot Cincinnati, 30-22, with goaltender Jonas Johansson steering aside 27 in a losing effort. The Cyclones return home on Wednesday night, in the first of two-straight against the Ft. Wayne Komets. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:35pm ET.
