CYCLONES SEE LEAD SLIP, FALL IN SHOOTOUT

Komets Win Second in a row over Cincinnati

Cincinnati, OH- The Cincinnati Cyclones (12-5-2-1) fell in a shootout, 4-3, to the Ft. Wayne Komets on Wednesday night. Forwards Nate MittonMyles Powell, and Pascal Aquin tallied the goals for Cincinnati.

After the Komets took a 1-0 lead 8:20 into the opening period on a power play goal from defenseman Chase Stewart, the Cyclones tied the game roughly three minutes later when Mitton threw a backhander towards the net from the right half wall, and it trickled into the net to even the game, 1-1.

The 1-1 tie held up throughout the remainder of the first period, and in the second Cincinnati took a 2-1 lead just 38 seconds in when forward Jesse Schultz sent a pass from the right corner to Powell in the slot, and he hammered a shot in to give the Cyclones a one-goal lead. Cincinnati pushed their advantage to a pair with 10 seconds remaining when Aquin danced his way around a couple of Ft. Wayne defenders and fired a shot from the right circle that beat Komets netminder Zach Fucale to give the ‘Clones a 3-1 edge after two periods.

Ft. Wayne came out firing in the third, getting a breakaway goal from forward J.C. Campagna 39 seconds into the frame, and a power play marker from forward Justin Hodgman at the 2:32 mark to tie the game, 3-3. Both teams continued to pressure offensively throughout the remainder of the frame, however neither side was able to net the go-ahead goal, and the game headed to overtime tied, 3-3.

After a scoreless overtime period the teams headed to a shootout, and in the skills competition, former Cyclone Jordan Sims netted the lone marker in the ninth round to seal Ft. Wayne’s 4-3 shootout win. The Cyclones outshot the Komets, 33-26, with goaltender Jonas Johansson stopping 22 in defeat. Cyclones welcome in the Komets again on Saturday evening for a 7:35pm face-off.
